Technological advances made a significant impact on business in the last three decades. By the mid 80's technology has become a major factor in businesses the world over. Technology allowed businesses to manage information better and improve production techniques through the use of computers and automation systems. However, despite all the technology business was still done the traditional way. Small to medium enterprises had a difficult time competing with major companies. Most small to medium enterprises were limited to doing business with the local market because it was simply too expensive to market and do business on an international level. For a small to medium enterprise to go international it meant a big financial commitment on their part; at the same time a lot of risk. International business was left to the major companies and conglomerates. Technology is about to change all of that.
The internet, one of man's greatest technological achievements changed everything. The advent of the internet allowed businesses around the world to grow like never before. It changed the way business is done the world over. It allowed businesses to reach a broader market beyond national boundaries. Small to medium enterprises are now able to compete with the big companies at an international level at a fraction of the price. Through the internet businesses were reach out to a broader market by being able to market and sell through their websites. In just a few years time, a very large percentage of businesses were able to compete in the international market. Globalization became a reality. It didn't end there, the internet also paved the way for the birth of new businesses the never existed before. These were internet based businesses.
E-business is a relatively young industry compared to more traditional businesses. Most of these businesses were virtually non-existent before because it was simply not possible. These businesses are highly dependent on the internet and are unable to expand and operate in places where there is no internet access. These businesses provided the solutions to problems and demands brought about by the internet age. Businesses such as call centers, web design and development outsourcing, online schools and tutorials, and so much more are just some of the new breed of businesses; and without the internet, such businesses would not exist. Now because of the internet virtual offices have become possible; an individual can venture into business without having the need for a physical office and conduct business from the comfort of his own home, hire a virtual secretary and outsource other jobs to other people through the net. For this type of venture business is conducted through the internet from marketing and advertising to negotiation and selling; almost everything is done through the internet.
One might say that e-business is a virtual industry, but for as long as businesses around the world are depending on the internet, then this industry will be here to stay and will continue to grow and prosper well into the future. The internet has made the world a better place to do business in.
