Today there is a lot of discussion about "Global ". What does the world mean? A man in the world? Every country is different. The same is true for every place, city or town. The skills that business people need to succeed in international business transcend globalization. Although not comprehensive, this list is based on more than 10 years of international business experience should be helpful.
Travel
Travel is a way of life for international business people. Long-distance air travel can be particularly brutal. The best advice is to arrive on the day before any important meeting or meeting to accommodate any jet lag. In the air, eating, sleeping, working and reading, but doing all the moderation. Air travel binge eating is common among international travelers. The thing you can't do is to exercise on the plane.
Accommodation
Whether it's a local office or a customer recommendation, stay in the location of the host. Although cost is a consideration, it is safe to facilitate meeting locations and service delivery. This is home away from home so choose it carefully.
Meals
Eat moderately. Business travel is not time to make up for every once was a diet. More temptation to eat than usual. On the other hand, when eating with people who live in the area, whether they are colleagues or customers, ask them what they recommend. In addition to allergies, it should be open to eating local dishes.
Drinking
Some cultures drink more than Americans. Drink less. Some don't. The best advice is to drink moderately. Like the diet, international business travel is not the time to beat college drinking records. It is unhealthy and it is insulting to customers and co-workers.
Clothes
Most American business people, even after the trend of commercial leisure, are still wearing a more casual international than business people. Learn from your local colleagues and even your customers what is the right dress. If you don't know, wear traditional business clothes (men and women's suits). If appropriate, this can always be worn. Dress like you mean business, but more importantly, dress appropriately. This also applies to evening dinners and functions outside of working hours.
Meeting
The meeting was very early. Don't leave until the meeting is over. Even if the other person stays to answer the phone, do not do so unless you are in a scheduled rest time. If the lunch is brought in, please eat moderately. Don't drink too much coffee, but bottled water is good. When the meeting is over, clean up yourself. Do not sit at meetings with your laptop and read your email. It's rude to take a lot of business cards with you. Introduce yourself to all of you. Don't interrupt, raise your voice or swear. If you have other phone calls, please arrange them in the evening without meeting the customer or your colleagues.
Entertainment
In the evening, having dinner with a client or colleague is a common thing. After meals it is often relaxing, exercising and catching up on some work by the next day. If you stay on weekends or take a day off, visit the local historical sites, museums, cultural events, also shops and restaurants. Staying in a hotel job is unhealthy and it will not make a more internationalized thought or training.
Communication
Find out how your customers and co-workers communicate without facing each other. E-mail is very common today. Conference calls are also important. Video conferencing calls can be very effective. Snail mail and Faxes are becoming less common today, but they still need to be done from time to again. Keep all the communication clear, crisp and dot. Listen to more words on the International conference call. Don't butt in. Take notes or minutes and make sure to distribute them within one business day of the call. Never use emails to make jokes, gag, anything obscene or not colored. Don't swear or raise your voice on a phone or video call. In most non-American cultures, listening and patience are worthy of attention.
Language
Although most non-American business people speak 2-4 languages, most of the speeches from the United States are 1, perhaps 2, not too good. For this, speak clearly in English. If asked to repeat or explain, please wait patiently. This is especially true on conference calls. It is acceptable to answer the local words or phrases. Make sure they are appropriate and that they are clearly pronounced. Don't use local words or phrases to make jokes. This is an insult to clients and local colleagues.
Although companies have a lot to do with finance, technology, human resources, research and development, and law, there are more things to do than people. For this reason, doing business internationally is about people. Through travel and work, with dignity and respect for customers and local colleagues, one is taking the first step to a broad range of skills that must be successful in international business.
